Traffic Stops

We have received several inquires from citizens concerning traffic stops, being stopped for a traffic violation can be a stressful time both for the person being stopped and the officer. More than half of all officers who die in the line of duty each year are killed during a traffic stop.

Morgantown Police Officers are trained to maintain professionalism and courtesy during traffic stops. Traffic stops are never “routine”. Every day our officers encounter impaired drivers, drugs, illegal firearms, fugitives and drivers who have suspended licenses. This is why officers place a great deal of emphasis on their safety and take a defensive posture until the risk of confrontation or injury is diminished.
What to expect during traffic stop:
  • A polite and respectful tone from the officer.
  • Answers to reasonable questions.
  • Prompt action in completing the citation/warning.
  • An explanation of the violation. Signing a citation is REQUIRED, but is not an admission of guilt.
  • If you disagree with the officer, arguing is not the answer. You have the right to have your case heard in court.
What we ask of you during a traffic stop:
  • Carry proper identification, driver’s license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance.
  • When signaled to stop, remain in your vehicle.
  • Remain calm and cooperative.
  • Don’t be surprised if another patrol car appears. This is done to assure the officers safety, since he/she patrols alone.
