When is the next police exam?
The civil service commission conducts written examinations when vacancies in the police department exist. The exam date is advertised well in advance. If you wish to be notified of the next written examination contact the city clerks office (304) 284-7434.

What is the starting salary?

Effective July 1, 2010 the base salary for a probationary police officer is $34,985.00.

What are the basic requirements to become a police officer?

To take the exam, you must be at least 18 years old and no older than 35 at the time of appointment. Must be a citizen of the United States, have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Does Morgantown Police accept lateral transfers?

No. Everyone must take the entry level exam and must successfully pass qualifying tests (physical fitness, interview boards, medical evaluation and drug screen, psychological test, polygraph and an extensive background investigation.

Do applicants get extra points on the exam for anything?

Yes, qualified veterans get preference points with proper documentation.

How long is the police academy training?
Currently the basic training class is 17 weeks.


I have experience and training with another law enforcement agency. Does that count?
Yes, if you are a certified WV Law Enforcement Officer you are exempt from attending the basic academy. Applicants who are certified in other states must provide documentation and transcripts to the state law enforcement training coordinator for credit approval. The final approval rests with the chief of police.


What are the benefits for police officers?
