Morgantown -- it’s a dream

Morgantown recently was selected as the No. 1 dream town in America, according to Bizjournals.com.
But what exactly is a dream town?
Recently, the Web site, which is a statistical site that follows demographic trends across the country, compiled a list of the best dream towns in America. G. Scott Thomas, a representative of Bizjournals.com, said they created the list to give information to those people who are moving to smaller towns.
“We know there was a substantial amount of interest in that,” Thomas said.
He said with many cities like Baltimore and Washington growing, many people would like to move to smaller towns.
“We looked at 632 small cities across the country,” Thomas said.
The list dwindled down to 141 towns from which the top ten were chosen. Morgantown received a perfect score of 100 percent, but that was not the true score, Thomas said.
Morgantown was pushed up to 100 percent.
“Every other score is based on Morgantown’s score,” Thomas said.
There were eight criteria that the Web site followed when choosing their top ten towns. The list was based on statistics alone; no one actually visited the town, Thomas said.
Morgantown scored high on access to health care, Thomas said. It came in second behind Charlottesville, Va.
The access to health care category was based on the number of doctors and specialists that are available to Morgantown citizens, among other things.
Another aspect that Bizjournals.com looked at was the support of education in the town, Thomas said.
“The University plays a big part in that,” Thomas said.
Morgantown also scored well on how much money was spent on libraries in the area.
Thomas said since Morgantown is in the top 10 percent of towns in the country and scored well on the Web site’s investigation, they decided to make it No. 1 on their list.
