Morgantown Museum Commission

Meeting Minutes

September 20, 2007

Present: Darryl Degripp, Pam Ball, Jim Spencer, Christie Venham, Jim Manilla, Rick McEwuen, and Wally Venable

Pam called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM.

Rick said that the 501(c)3 application is ready and awaiting a control number from the Secretary of State’s office. We have received our State tax number and have opened the checking account at Citizens bank for the Friends of the Morgantown History Museum. The $5000.00 check from the County Commission and the $100.00 check from Dr. Fred Schaup have been deposited giving us a beginning balance of $5100.00. A $25.00 check has been written to the Secretary of State’s office for registration fees for the Friends group from that account. The final balance is $5075.00 for that account.

Darryl is organizing the basement and will be contacting Ralph Larue at BOPARC to have the boxes of glassware moved into the basement as soon as the dumpster is filled and removed. It should be done in a few more weeks. The Morgan Shirt display can then be moved in to the area where the glassware crates were stored and the Sally McClain paintings can be installed on the wall near the office.

Jim demonstrated a mock up of a possible weekly newspaper promotion called “Who, What, When?”. This would feature one of our vintage photos and requesting additional information or comments from the public.

Pam brought up an opportunity that had been presented to her regarding selling note cards designed locally. It was generally felt that this needed more investigation as to the legality of that type of sale merchandise at this time. It was decided that this matter should be brought up again on a future agenda pending a legal opinion. Christie said the sale of copies of photos that we already own outright could be a good money maker. WVU sells many copies to other organizations as well as individuals.

Pam announced the offer by a local person to develop and construct a web site for us at no cost.  She also said that the owner of the mirror shop on Spruce St. has offered to donate a mirror etched with a likeness of Don Knotts. She had also talked with Emil Ferrar about the glass basketball. He owns the glass football and said that it was blown at the Houze Glass plant in Pt. Marion for the Zeller Company formerly located on Beechurst Avenue.

Pam reminded everyone that she and Carmen will be setting up a display at the Mason Dixon Festival at Mason Dixon Park on October 13th from 11:00 to 4:00.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:10 PM.
