Award for Best Walking City

Morgantown Best Walking City in West Virginia, 34th in the Country

The City of Morgantown received the distinction of the “Best Walking City” in the State of West Virginia and the 34th Best Walking City in the Country according to a just-released study by Prevention magazine and the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). Prevention and the APMA annually team up to measure the walkability of America’s cities as interest in walking for fitness remains strong. Walking is the most popular form of exercise with 87.5% of Americans walking for fitness.

More than 500 U.S. cities, including D.C., were evaluated and ranked on 14 walking criteria which included: the percentage of adults who walk to work; number of parks and green space per square mile; use of mass transit; and percentage of adults who walk for fitness; the number of destinations such as restaurants, stores, parks, theaters, within a walkable distance from the center of town; rails to trails programs; and cleanliness of the city.
