Attendees: Bill MacDonald, Marilyn Bowers, Sandy Poulson, Frank McGreevy, Ralph Larue, Marchetta Maupin, Linda Bagby
Minutes from the March meeting approved.
As a courtesy, the Public Works Director will contacted about this issue. The problem will be introduced to the City Council and the clean up of this area will be put out on bid. Terry Hough and Bill Rumble will be contacted about installing some fence screening and later some landscaping to enhance this area. Bill MacDonald will contact Terry Hough to get this project moving.
We still have a vacancy from First Ward. Don Spencer was working on filling this vacancy but since he is absent we will have to wait on this. There was discussion about possibly selecting a second person for the Fifth Ward. Bill MacDonald will talk to Don Spencer about the membership issues.
On April 3 Marchetta made a presentation at the South Hills town meeting.
Sandy and Beege passed out a series of e-mails between them and Jason Ruehl, a reporter from the Dominion Post. We are expecting the DP to print an article about the Beautification Commission and specifically the Proud of our Town Awards.
Marchetta announced that it is “basket time”. She is gathering the plants for the 49 lamp post baskets and the planting will be on Sunday, May 21, beginning at 1 p.m. All volunteers are welcome.
William Brieding is back as a 6-month laborer to help Marchetta with the summer work.
The water truck is back in operation.
There is a Beautification sticker now on the door of Marchetta’s new truck.
The construction near Subway on the Wharf has compromised part of the planting bed. Some trees are not doing well. The Chestnut Street minipark has had shrubs removed – one of the master gardeners has done some planting there which may help with the problems caused by people using that area inappropriately.
The planters at the Met Theater have been moved to Spruce Street, Lot A.
New maps should be available at out next meeting.
All sites around town need weeded and cleared of winter debris.
The letter Marchetta was to write to the bidders on the South Univ. project has been turned over to Bill MacDonald.
Linda Bagby of Biafora’s, made a South University presentation. They developed their plan with the thoughts of economy and low maintenance. The largest island is about 1/3 mile in length. The presentation indicated grass on the ends with Ginko and Service Berry trees. They tried to select plants that would be salt tolerant and require minimum maintenance. Marchetta commented that all the flowers in the presentation present a maintenance issue because of the traffic on that road. It was decided by the Commission to keep the plans and have other people look them over and make comments and changes. Biafora’s will made the modifications for us
Meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandy Poulson
