Minutes
Beautification Commission meeting of February 15, 2006 at 5:15 p.m.
Attendees: Bill MacDonald, Don Spencer, Ralph LaRue, Marchetta Maupin, Sandy Poulson,,
Marilyn Bowers, Frank McGreevy.
South
University Island Project: Several of us attended class presentations
by Kara Hurst’s students today. All of
the students asked for street trees on the entrances to Morgantown. They all mentioned consistency of signage
also. We received a copy of the proposal
made by Biafore Lancscape
for this work. This cost will include a
deduction of 481.00 because the city provided maps at no cost. The other vendor.
Joe Hajnas was delayed in receiving the
information because of computer problem so they haven’t submitted their
proposal as yet.
Purchase of Truck
for Marchetta: She is waiting to
hear from the dealer who is in Spencer, WV
to determine if they will deliver or she will have to go and pick it up.
Membership: We reviewed a proposed letter to be sent to
the membership to determine the status of those absent members. The letter was approved for mailing.
Public Education: It was noted that April 1 will be Project
Pride Weekend. Laura Stiller at Solid
Waste is in charge of this event. The
plan is to clean up the trails and roadsides around Morgantown. We discussed the need for some outlet to
express the concerns and possible solutions of the Beautification
Commission. Suggestions were going to
the newspaper for a series of articles, working with Scott Rotruck
of the Chamber of Commerce, Terri Cutright of Mainstreet
Morgantown, some WVU representative. We
need to brainstorm with everyone to determine how we can make Morgantown
a great community. M. Bowers and Sandy Poulson will talk to Chuck Penn to find out who his contact
with the newspaper is and try to meet with the Dominion Post before the next
meeting. This item will remain on the
agenda.
Master Plan: Don Spencer distributed the revisions to this
plan.
Adopt-a-Street: To date there are 10 groups not
contacted. Marchetta is working on the list and Donna is to finalize it.
Proud of our Town: S. Poulson and M.
Bowers to continue working on this issue.
Part of the discussion to be conducted with Chuck Penn as this was his
project before he resigned.
Project Reports: Marchetta announced that beautification operating budget
requests approx.47,000 for supplies, tools, etc. (this includes the basket
material). She has worked with
engineering on the weight of the baskets to accommodate the posts being
installed. There was some vandalism of
trees at Ruby McQuain Park
and she has taken care of the repair.
Meeting adjourned at 6:30
