Confident City Cycling Course

In Confident City Cycling, you’ll learn everything from selecting the best bike for you to training to make your rides enjoyable from start to finish. You’ll learn in a classroom, in a parking lot and on the road.
Confident City Cycling is recommended for adults and children above age 14.
A grant from Governor Manchin makes Confident City Cycling possible. The Confident City Cycling course is the Traffic Skills 101 component of the League of American Bicyclists’ Smart Cycling program that has been continuously developed for more than 30 years. Instructors are certified and insured by the League of American Bicyclists.

Every Monday evening at 6:00 pm, you can improve your bicycling with Morgantown’s Confident City Cycling Traffic Skills 101 course. Each session includes a 1-hour classroom discussion followed by an informal leisurely ride.
Traffic Skills 101 is the core of Morgantown Confident City Cycling program. In Traffic Skills 101, you will learn:
- Bicycle Form, Fit and Function: the parts of a bicycle; bike selection; sizing; adjusting your bicycle fit and the pre-ride safety check .
- Basic Maintenance: tools for the road; tire repair; adjusting brakes and adjusting derailleurs.
- Clothing and Equipment: helmets, clothing, accessories and required equipment.
- Basic Handling Skills: gears & gear selection; starting/stopping; steering in a straight line and scanning & signaling.
- Bicycling in Traffic: principles of traffic law; lane positioning and scanning, signaling and negotiating.
- Avoiding Crashes: why crashes happen; crash prevention and crash avoidance maneuvers.
- Efficiency, Power, Endurance: cadence and smooth shifting; nutrition & hydration and training routines.
- Riding with Groups and on the Trail: group etiquette and trail etiquette.
You will learn principles in a classroom and practice skills in a parking lot and on the road. Traffic Skills 101 is recommended for adults and children above age 14. Instructors are certified and insured by the League of American Bicyclists.

Traffic Skills 101 Full Course: Weekend
One weekend of each month, you can complete the entire Traffic Skills 101 course. See the Calendar for dates. The weekend course runs 9 am – 5 pm Saturday and 9 am – 12:30 pm Sunday. Approximately half the time is in the classroom and the other half is in a parking lot and on the road. The weekend course covers the same topics as the weekly course.
To ensure adequate materials, refreshments and space, you must pre-register for the weekend course. You can pre-register by contacting Frank Gmeindl or by completing the on-line registration form at http://www.morgantown.com/Confident-cycling.htm .

Cost
A $5 fee for each session is payable at the door. Those who complete all 8 sessions and pass the tests will receive a significant cash prize.
The full course of 8 topics plus the tests can be completed the weekend of April 10-11. Pre-registration is required for the weekend course.

The weekend course is free for WVU students, faculty and staff; $20 for Monongalia County residents that are not associated with WVU and $40 for those who are not associated with WVU and live outside Monongalia County.
Instructors are certified by the League of American Bicyclists.
